Card Counting Practice

Master the Hi-Lo system with proven drills. From beginner basics to casino-ready skills.

Card counting isn't memorization—it's developing unconscious competence. These drills build the reflexes you need to count in real casinos.

The Card Counting Learning Path

Most people try to learn everything at once and get overwhelmed. Follow this progression for success:

1️⃣

Values

Memorize +1, 0, -1 values instantly

2️⃣

Speed

Count single deck in under 30 seconds

3️⃣

Distractions

Count while TV plays or people talk

4️⃣

True Count

Convert running count to true count

Time to Proficiency:

1-2 weeks of daily practice (1 hour/day) gets you to casino-ready level. Speed comes with repetition, not intelligence.

Drill 1: Single Deck Speed Counting

How to Practice

  1. 1. Shuffle a single deck of cards
  2. 2. Start timer and begin dealing cards one by one
  3. 3. Add/subtract values mentally (+1, 0, -1)
  4. 4. Stop when you reach the final count
  5. 5. Check: Single deck should always end at 0

Goals & Progression

Beginner (Week 1)

Goal: Under 60 seconds. Focus on accuracy over speed.

Intermediate (Week 2)

Goal: Under 45 seconds. Values should be automatic.

Advanced (Week 3+)

Goal: Under 30 seconds. This is casino-ready speed.

Pro Tips:

  • • Count out loud at first, then silently
  • • Don't worry about true count yet—just running count
  • • If you lose count, start over. Speed comes with accuracy
  • • Practice 5-10 rounds per session

Drill 2: Counting With Distractions

Casinos are designed to distract you. Learn to count while your attention is divided.

TV/News Background

Turn on TV with news or sports. Count while "listening" to the broadcast.

Why: Dealers and players talk constantly

Music Playing

Play casino-style music or radio. Count while focusing on rhythm.

Why: Casinos always have background music

Phone Conversation

Have someone ask you questions while you count. Answer while maintaining count.

Why: People will try to talk to you

Advanced Challenge:

Count cards while solving simple math problems (like calculating tips). This simulates making betting decisions while maintaining your count.

Drill 3: True Count Conversion

The Exercise

Deal cards and maintain running count. Every 10-15 cards, estimate decks remaining and calculate true count.

Example:
Cards dealt: 26
Running count: +4
Decks remaining: ~5
True count: +4 ÷ 5 = +0.8 → +1

Deck Estimation Practice

Get good at estimating decks remaining by feel:

Thick stack (full shoe) 6-8 decks
Medium thickness 4-5 decks
Getting thin 2-3 decks
Almost done 1 deck

Mastery Check:

You should be able to estimate within 0.5 decks and convert true count within 3-5 seconds. This determines your betting decisions.

Common Beginner Mistakes

❌ Mistakes to Avoid

Losing Count

When you lose count, restart immediately. Don't try to guess.

Counting Too Slowly

Dealers deal fast. Practice speed counting to keep up.

Forgetting Values

Memorize: Low= +1, Neutral= 0, High= -1. Make it automatic.

✅ Pro Habits to Build

Start Fresh Each Shoe

Always reset count to 0 when new shoe begins.

Count All Cards

Count every card dealt, including burns and other players' cards.

Stay Relaxed

Tension slows your counting. Practice in comfortable settings.
